The Moultrie County Health Department (MCHD) is the foundation of our county’s health care system. As public health professionals, we dedicate ourselves to protecting the health and safety of Moultrie County residents and visitors. Subsequently, we strive to accomplish our mission through programs and services designed to:

- Protect us against environmental hazards
- Encourage healthy behaviors
- Prepare for and respond to disasters, and
- Assure the quality, affordability, and accessibility of health services
Public health services require accountability…
The State of Illinois and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) are responsible for public health in our state. Specifically, they have established laws and regulations to promote, protect, maintain, and improve the health and safety of Illinois residents and visitors. Furthermore, they supervise this effort by reviewing our county health department’s adherence to public health standards and other measures of accountability.
Our public health department in Moultrie County serves residents under the authority of the County’s Board of Health and the Moultrie County Board. We also encourage residents to participate in assessing public health needs and formulate a community health plan. Additionally, we work with community organizations to ensure that needed services and programs are available.

Today, financial support for public health services in Moultrie County comes from a variety of revenue sources. These are significant sources, such as state funds, county funds, federal funds, fees, Medicaid, grants, and other contracted services.
The Moultrie County Health Department maintains full certification with the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). The Illinois General Assembly governs these certification standards under Part 600 of the Certified Local Health Department Code.
Certification makes our health department eligible for numerous grant awards, such as the Local Health Protection Grant. Certified local health departments also qualify to apply for IDPH categorical grants. These are grants designed to address specific health needs. The IDPH also awards additional State and federal funds annually. These altogether support the Moultrie County Health Department’s ability to deliver public health services to our county residents and visitors.
