The Flu Mist Vaccine: Is It an Option for You?
What do you need to know about Flu Mist, and who should consider it?
Flu Mist is a nasal spray vaccine option. The traditional flu shot, which is given as an injection, contains an inactivated virus. Flu Mist is sprayed directly into the nose but delivers a weakened form of the live flu virus.
Vaccines work by imitating an infection and causing the body to produce antibodies to defend itself against an illness. Flu Mist triggers the body's immune system to recognize and fight off the flu virus.
Who Can Get Flu Mist?
The Flu Mist vaccine is available for healthy individuals between the ages of 2 and 49. It’s an appealing option for people who want to avoid needles.
However, not everyone is eligible for Flu Mist. It is not recommended for those with underlying health conditions, such as asthma, a weakened immune system, or a history of severe allergies. It’s also not recommended for adults over 50, young children under 2, or pregnant women.
How Effective Is Flu Mist?
Flu Mist is generally considered as effective as the traditional flu shot. Regardless, its effectiveness may vary from year to year. Factors determining effectiveness include the prevalent flu strain, proper administration, and the individual’s health and immune response.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) monitors the effectiveness of flu vaccines. They recommend Flu Mist as a safe and effective option for those eligible to receive it.
What Are the Side Effects?
Like any vaccine, Flu Mist can cause mild side effects. The most common include:
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Mild fever
These side effects are usually short-lived and mild compared to the flu itself. Severe reactions are rare. However, you may have concerns about yourself or your child’s reaction to Flu Mist. If so, it’s important to consult a healthcare professional.
Is Flu Mist Right for You?
If you’re in the eligible age group and are generally healthy, Flu Mist could be an option for you. However, if you have any underlying health conditions, talk to your doctor before proceeding with FluMist or any live virus immunization.
